My Book by Zoran

We have been learning to make digital storybooks and even shared our knowledge with Room 9 students this week. Room 4 thought it was fun working collaboratively.

Zoran took it one (or two) steps further and created this amusing book which we can use as an exemplar for next time.

Descriptive writing this week in Room 4.

Dear Parents,

Room 4 have written some incredible descriptions this week using www.buildyourwildself.com website as motivation. They created their "Wildself" then they wrote about him or her. After that they recrafted their writing, read it over to a buddy and many shared their work with the whole class. Finally, when they felt confident to record their writing, they found a quiet spot outside of the classroom and armed with an ipad, off they went to record their description.

We would love your constructive feedback, one positive comment and perhaps one suggestion for an improvement. (But as we will be continuing to view and reflect on each others work in class time,  just a comment about one aspect of your child's work or someone elses' would be valuable for the students).

Thank you!

Milla's Wildself!

Bruno's Wildself!

Aoi's Wildself

Tommy's wildself!

Kasra's wildself!

Jessica goes wild!

Kokoa describes her Wildself!

Oscar describes his Wildself!

Narrative writing

WALT write a narrative.
A narrative is the story or account of something. It may be a true story, in which you describe something that happened to you, or it may be a tale about imaginary people and events such as a novel, a short story or a folktale.

Today we read some narrative stories in our reading groups and we are using the Story Mountain Idea to help us plan our own stories.

We are learning about some of the features of a narrative so soon we will be able to tell our parents all about this type of writing.

Recycling facts from Jessica

Grouping and sorting rubbish.

Year 2 have been wondering about the challenge of sustainability. We have read and discussed the slogan Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and have looked at all the different ways of grouping rubbish. In particular, the recycling codes seen on many plastic or glass objects.

These are some thoughts from Room 4.
1. We classify things as rubbish only when we decide that they are no longer useful to us.
2. Trash isn't always garbage as often objects can be reused or recycled. Today we read a book about Frank who wanted a brother so he decided to make one out of a big pile of trash. He called his new brother Stan. He was a valuable member of Frank's family.
3. Keeping our environment healthy is very important so we must try and be as sustainable as possible

Composting in the Apex garden.

As part of our Sustainability Challenge the Year 2 team are learning about compost.
Here is the story Room 4 wrote.
Yesterday all of the Year 2's helped to fill the compost bin. We put lots of twigs, leaves, blood and bone, grass clippings and finally we added water. We used a spade, a shovel, a broom and a rake. We did the composting because Mrs Bridgman came into school to talk to us about the 3 R's. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Next steps in Reading . . .

Dear Parents
I will be diving into inferencing next Term (although I've dabbled in it here and there)

I LOVE to start with this book:

It is quite a simple read with MANY opportunities for the children to use their inferring skills.

I first start off by reading it orally and talking about what inference really means-

Use the text clues
+
Use what I know
=
Inference

The kids catch on pretty quickly!

Then on the second day we use an organizer to fill in our thinking.  I find that this helps those that  need a visual, will understand more clearly after practicing it this way.

The sample is filled in with references to "The Stray Dog," but it could be used with any book!

When reading with your child remember to discuss those hidden meanings and try to let your child respond to the book in their own words.

Guess who went to visit Greedy Cat?

r

Year 2 loved The Greedy Cat Show. We wrote about the show when we returned to school.
Here are a few stories from Room 4.

Greedy Cat Show by Emaan
This morning we went to the Greedy Cat Show at Takapuna. We went by bus. Remi and I were talking in the bus and we were having fun in the bus. It was taking ages to get there. We got to pat Greedy Cat. He was totally cute.
Greedy Cat by Jecholeah
This morning my class went to The Greedy Cat Show. My class loved it because we loved Greedy Cat's tail because Greedy Cat's tail was so fluffy and nice and like a fluffy bunny rabbit. I loved that funny show and I felt happy and that was the end of that.

Greedy Cat by Oscar
Today Room 4 and Room 2 and Room 1 went to the Greedy Cat Show. We got there by a bus and it was at Takapuna. Greedy Cat ate all of the food.

Greedy Cat Show by Aoi.
This morning Room 4, Room 2 and Room 1 hopped on a bus to Takapuna. We watched a Greedy Cat Show and he ate all the cake, sausages, sticky buns and potato chips. Then, the pepper made him say Yowl!
